Data Analysis and Visual Analytics Ph.D. Fellowships
The College of Computing at Georgia Tech is accepting applications for two Data Analysis and Visual Analytics PhD Fellowships.
The Fellowships provide 2½ academic years of support with a stipend of $2300 per month; payment of tuition and fees; and a $1500 per year for three years travel allowance to attend relevant conferences. After the fellowship period, students will be supported as Graduate Research Assistants while finishing their Ph.D.
College of Computing faculty active in research and teaching in Data Analysis and Visual Analytics include John Stasko, Haesun Park, Guy Lebanon, Jim Foley, Alex Gray, Hongyuan Zha among others. A quick search will lead you to their web sites where you can find more detail about their work.
In addition to a broad range of computing courses taught by the College’s 80-some faculty and related courses in psychology, math and industrial and systems engineering, specialized courses that lead directly into visual analytics research include human-computer interaction, information visualization, machine learning, data analysis, data mining, and many others.
Georgia Tech is the lead institution in the NSF/DHS research initiative on Foundations of Data and Visual Analytics (FODAVA, http://fodava.gatech.edu/) conducting our own research and serving as a coordination hub for research at 14 other universities. We are also a partner in the new VACCINE (Visual Analytics for Command, Control and Interoperability Environments, http://www.VisualAnalytics-CCI.org) Center, led by Purdue University, which is part of the DHS Center of Excellence in Command, Control, and Interoperability.
During their Ph.D. studies, fellowship holders will have twelve months of summer or semester internships at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory or other laboratories conducting relevant research. They will also have the opportunity to spend a semester at UNC Charlotte – partner school to Georgia Tech in the VACCINE Center – to be able to take courses not available at GT and to interact with their faculty and graduate students.
The fellowships are provided by a grant from the US Department of Homeland Security, and are available to US Citizens.
Applicants must apply for admission to Georgia Tech and separately for the Fellowship.
For admission to the Georgia Tech Computer Science or Human-Centered Computing Ph.D. programs, visit http://www.cc.gatech.edu/education for general information and http://www.gradadmiss.gatech.edu/apply/ to actually apply. Applications for fall 2010 admission are due by December 15, 2009. For further information, you may contact Professor John Stasko, stasko@cc.gatech.edu.
